Guttering helps play a vital role in protecting and safeguarding a home’s structure by helping to channel the rainwater away from it. It does this by diverting the fallen water away from the foundation of the property. Without it, water can easily find its way into a property and cause significant damage.
What happens if the guttering is damaged?
If guttering is damaged or obstructed in any way it can affect its performance and lead to problems. Allowing a buildup of debris can affect performance by causing blockages and overflow. Clogged gutters can lead to a multitude of problems, from damp walls to damaged roofs and even foundation issues, affecting the structural integrity of a home and causing costly damage. Having a gutter system that functions effectively prevents this water damage as well as any rotting or general deterioration.
Why is gutter maintenance important?
When your guttering gets filled with leaves, water can overflow and saturate the wall below causing water damage and allow damp into to your property. It is important to carry out regular gutter maintenance to prevent costly repairs further down the line. Properly maintaining them will:
Prevents water damage:
Clogged gutters cause water to overflow, potentially leading to leaks, dampness, and even foundation issues.
Protects the roof
Overflowing water can seep under shingles and damage a roof’s structure.
Maintains property value
A well-maintained gutter system contributes to the overall health of a home and increases its curb appeal.
How do I know if my guttering needs cleaning?
Visible debris: Leaves, twigs, and other materials accumulating in the gutter channels.
Water overflowing: Water spills over the gutter edges instead of flowing freely through the downspouts.
Rust or sagging: Signs of wear and tear due to water buildup and improper drainage.
Damp patches: Moisture stains on walls or ceilings, indicating water leakage from overflowing gutters.
Essential gutter maintenance tips
Gutters should be cleaned twice a year, ideally in the spring and autumn when debris accumulates most. Autumn time is particularly important when the leaves begin to fall as build up will cause a blockage and gutters must be working effectively during those wet and windy upcoming months.
Clear debris by hand
Use garden gloves or a small garden trowel to safely remove leaves, twigs, and any other visible blockages.
Flush the system
Use a garden hose to flush out any remaining dirt or debris and ensure proper water flow through the downspouts.
Inspect for damage
Look for signs of rust, cracks, or loose brackets that may require repair or replacement.
Clearing a blocked outlet
Block the bottom of the downpipe with a rag to prevent debris from reaching the drain and scoop out leaves, then remove the rag and wash out the gutter and downpipe with water.
Overflowing hopper head
Scoop what you can out of the hopper head and if there is a blockage in the downpipe try and unblock it from the bottom by covering the drain and using a hose to push up the pipe and dislodge debris. No luck? Use a drain rod to unblock the drain from the top.
Unblocking a drain
Lift the inspection cover off the blocked drain and use drain rods to slide into the drain outlet pipe. Push the rods down the drain and add more as you need them, using a push-and-pull motion to help dislodge the blockage.
Additional tips for optimal gutter care
Install gutter guards
Consider installing a leaf guard or gutter brush to minimise the accumulation of leaves and debris in the first place.
Trim nearby trees
Regularly trim overhanging branches to prevent leaves from directly falling into the gutters to avoid accidents.
Choose the right ladder
Ensure you have a sturdy and secure ladder for safe access while cleaning your gutters.
Seek professional help
If you’re uncomfortable working at heights or require extensive repairs, hire a professional in gutter cleaning.
