It’s summer, and by rights you should be enjoying the comfortable coolness and shade from the sun that a conservatory provides. Except that your old white plastic 1980s extension isn’t doing its job very well, and as a result you have something that resembles a cross between a sauna and a building you could grow bananas in. In other words, it’s far too hot…
The craze for conservatories 30 or 40 years ago meant that many were built quickly, with little thought for their thermal properties. Homeowners soon discovered that they were too hot in summer and freezing in the winter, which is why so many were relegated to storage areas or not used at all.
Today, though, conservatory design has come on in leaps and bounds, not least around thermal efficiency. The newly-built conservatory of 2023 will undoubtedly feature well insulated double-glazing with uPVC or aluminium frames and a tiled, glass or solid roof that keeps out the elements while regulating the temperature inside the building.
Steve Rawding, Sales and Marketing Director at leading South East home improvement company SEH BAC, says that a replacement conservatory roof can reduce fuel bills while helping to provide a living space that is comfortable all year round.
“We offer various roof replacements options at SEH BAC,” he said, “and all of them offer outstanding levels of thermal efficiency for all seasons. Plus, they’re stylish, easy to maintain and will suit most properties.”
For example, if you’re thinking about a like-for-like replacement of a glass roof, you’ll find that a modern installation will include high-quality glazing that will deflect the sun’s rays in summer and trap heat in the winter.
“Homeowners could also consider a solid roof replacement,” says Steve. “These are quick to install and feature large areas of glazing combined with solid sections, meaning that you can vary the glass-to-solid ratio to suit your needs.”
Other replacement options from SEH BAC include a tiled roof made from lightweight composite tiles that allow air to flow around your conservatory, regulating temperature inside, and a lantern roof comprising a collection of angled glazed panels with outstanding thermal properties and even self-cleaning glass.
“Having a replacement roof fitted now means that you’ll get the benefits of coolness and shade now, preparing for the winter months and a nice warm extension to enjoy in colder weather,” Steve said.
