Transforming spaces – how to turn a tired extension into a dream living area
In The Press
The idea of taking up a larger mortgage to buy a bigger property is – for the moment, at least – something of a brave move, considering the interest rates hike.
A better option for anyone with a bit of cash to spare is to extend. Thanks to modern design and building techniques this is a much less complicated job than it used to be, and it works particularly well for homes where an extension already exists.
The problem with older extensions is that they were built for their time. Today, we crave more light and space in buildings that can be used all year round and are environmentally friendly. In other words, nothing like the conservatories of the 1980s…!
This was the issue for a Bicknacre-based client of SEH BAC, the home improvements company with branches all over Essex. The client had a small, old-fashioned circular conservatory to the rear of his detached house that had outlived its usefulness. The family wanted something that would extend their kitchen and provide an all-seasons living space.
After a number of consultations, it was agreed that a modern ‘Lean To’ conservatory would be the ideal solution. The single-storey 40 m2 extension would run the full length of the back of the house and comprise a conservatory solid roof, aluminium bifold doors and uPVC casement windows.
The conservatory’s inherent simplicity meant it was easy for SEH BAC construction staff to install. Its casement windows can achieve a thermal-efficiency rating of A+ (the highest possible rating) and the pitched, solid-tiled roof featured glazing panels, letting in plenty of natural light.
An outstanding feature of the build is the installation of five metre-long aluminium bi-fold doors. Bi-folds are on trend now, so when the client asked for a focal point for the extension combined with easy access to the garden this was the perfect solution. The doors incorporate a streamlined opening system and slimline frames, maximising the extension’s spaciousness while giving it an ultra-modern feel. To say the client was delighted with the overall result is an understatement!
If you don’t have the space or the budget for a brand-new build, there are plenty of other options to pep up your existing conservatory. For example, a new roof can really help to insulate a previously chilly conservatory while providing extra light in the form of roof lanterns. Upgrading your windows to thermally efficient uPVC or aluminium will give you much more warmth, opening the opportunity to use the conservatory all year round.
SEH BAC has been helping homeowners across the South East achieve their renovation dreams for more than 50 years. The company has experience in many areas of property transformation, giving you the confidence to trust them to give you the home you deserve.
