Orangeries Colchester

Orangeries, a style born in the eighteenth century but still desirable today, offers a fantastic light-filled space you can enjoy as a place to relax or entertain. An orangery offers an ideal balance for letting the light in like a glass extension yet maintaining the feel of a full home extension.

Understanding Orangeries: A Premium Home Extension Option

Orangeries differ from traditional conservatories by having brick supporting walls rather than being fully glazed. Although our orangeries are made-to-measure, they tend to be designed in a rectangular shape to maximise the floor space.

They add an element of style to any home, but it's important to consider any planning permission requirements.

What size orangery can you build without planning permission?

While most builds will fall within the scope of ‘permitted development rights’, acceptable size may vary based on your location and the specific regulations set by your local planning authority. In England you can usually build a single-storey orangery without planning permission if it meets all the following criteria:

  1. The orangery does not extend more than 50% of the total area of your property,
  2. The height of the orangery does not exceed 4 meters,
  3. The eaves height of the orangery does not exceed 3 meters, if it is within 2 meters of the boundary,
  4. The orangery is not forward of the principal elevation of the house, and
  5. The orangery does not include any verandas, balconies, or raised platforms.

What is the difference between a orangery and conservatory?

An orangery is a solidly constructed extension with brick or stone walls, large windows, and a flat roof with a central skylight. A conservatory, on the other hand, is predominantly made of glass, including the walls and roof. It is typically less solid in construction compared to an orangery.

Choosing the right materials for your orangery

We offer orangeries in uPVC or aluminium. uPVC offers durability, low maintenance, and a wide range of colour choices. Aluminium offers strength, slimline profles, and excellent thermal efficiency. Incorporating double glazing allows for abundant natural light and panoramic views, creating a bright and airy space. Another option is to combine different materials to achieve a unique and personalized look.
